Feeling bloated and sluggish? Your body probably just needs a little reset.
Maybe you're recovering from a party-heavy weekend, starting a new relationship, or want to revamp your eating habits. If you look online for inspiration, as soon as you scroll through Instagram, you'll be bombarded with 10 different ads about how to "detox" your body with protein powders, smoothies, or juice cleanses. It can be overwhelming at times, and most people are tempted to click the “purchase button” but in reality, your body is equipped to eliminate toxins and it doesn’t require special diets or expensive supplements to do so. Your body has natural detoxification system that you can boost with these simple steps.
Cut your sugar + salt Intake: one way to do a healthy detox is decrease the amount of sugar and salt you consume. For example, salt causes the body to retain excess fluid making you feel bloated resulting in your clothes feeling uncomfortable. If you end up consuming too much salt, you can detox yourself of the extra water weight by drinking more water! According to Healthline, it reduces the secretion of the antidiuretic hormone and increases urination, eliminating more water and waste products.
Avoid processed food and eat antioxidant rich foods: limit your junk food intake and replacing it with healthier choices like fruits and vegetables to reduce consumption. Try eating colorful variety of fruits and veggies for your diet, along with whole grains, beans and legumes, and small amounts of nuts and seeds. Just remember, some cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, or kale can cause bloating, so incorporate them into your diet gradually: a little each day. And remember to pace yourself and practice present, mindful eating can prevent you from overeating and feeling sluggish afterward.
Quick tip: avoid skipping meals, as it will only slow down your metabolism, stick to a regular eating habit by keeping your fridge and pantry stocked with healthy fixings like yogurt, peanut butter, and whole wheat bread or wraps for quick and easy meals. Try pre + probiotics and up your water intake: if your gut health restart needs a bit of a boost, adding pre + probiotics into your daily routine might help to boost your system while drinking water will help “flush” out the waste in your system.
So, what’s the difference between Pre + Probiotics?
Probiotics: are live bacteria found in certain foods or supplements. They can provide numerous health benefits. You might want to try a probiotic supplement or incorporate more foods containing probiotics, including yogurt (or plant-based yogurt, if you're cutting back on dairy), kimchi, kombucha, and other fermented foods into your meals.
Prebiotics: are substances from types of carbs (mostly fiber) that humans can’t digest. The beneficial bacterium in your gut eats this fiber. So, eating rich prebiotics food sources include tomatoes, artichokes, bananas, asparagus, onions, garlic, and oats.
And how much water should you be drinking? The amount you should commit to chugging per day will depend on your activity level, environment, climate, and whether you're pregnant or breastfeeding. According the Healthline, its recommended that people to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day.
Take good care of your skin and focus on sleep: Your skin plays a big role in the body's detoxification process. One way to enhance detoxing through the skin is through sweating. Infrared saunas can be a solid option if you want to get sweaty or try dry brushing and oil massages to help exfoliate the toxins from your skin, refresh circulation while detoxifying the body. So basically, treat yourself!
Since sleep is intrinsically connected to stress and how you manage it, now's the time to get into a better sleep routine. Try to get regularly sleep between 7 to 9 hours per night to help promote good health. If you're having trouble winding down and getting to sleep or sleeping deeply, you can consult your doctor on a healthy sleep-enhancing supplements. Or try a hot shower or bath before bed to complete your "detox" before you settle down for a good night's rest.
Add more movement to your routine and get your body moving: if you’re feeling sluggish, you may not be moving enough. Regular exercise is a form of healthy detox as it encourages circulation in the blood and lymph system. Doing so will enhance digestion, reduce tension, lubricate joints, and strengthen your body. For those reasons, people who exercise regularly have fewer toxins in their systems than those who don't. Try adding a regular walk to your midday break or simply taking time out to dance around your apartment are two ways to easily add to your daily movement routine. Of course, adequate sleep, drinking enough water, and eating enough whole foods will make a difference in your energy levels as well.
