Bad hair days are a bummer; that’s a hair truth. It’s no surprise that having healthy hair requires effort to keep it looking lush. And while there isn’t a secret shortcut, maintaining great hair can be effortless by taking the time to introduce new daily habits into your routine. April Ciniello, from Spekkhio Salon, shares her pro-tips to help you establish healthy habits in your haircare routine for great hair days ahead!
Eat a balance diet: there’s no escaping it, you are what you eat. “Your hair is mostly made up of protein, so eating a balanced diet of protein rich food is important, like adding fresh produce and healthy fats to your meals on a regular basis.” Think about swapping out processed foods like processed meats, fries, white bread and cookies for poultry or fish, spinach, beans, and plain yogurt with berries.
Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate: this goes hand in hand with your healthy diet. Make sure you are getting your daily recommended water intake – for some this can be challenging, but well worth it for the health of your hair. “Especially for those with dry, frizz-prone or coloured hair. It prevents against breakage and damage, adds luster, and promotes hair growth while keeping your skin glowing. For added moisture, I would also recommend using a hydrating treatment like the NouNou Nourishing Mask by Davines. This mask not only hydrates the hair, but it is also enriched with vitamin E which gives the hair deep nourishment and restore it back to its’ natural softness.
Get a trim: Regular haircuts are necessary to maintain healthy looking hair and to avoid breakage. “I recommend to my clients coming in every 6 to 12 weeks, depending on your hair type, styling preferences and coloring routine. A must have protect to maintain your hair’s integrity between haircuts is Olaplex N 3 – hair perfector. This is a treatment, not a conditioner. It reduces breakage and visibly strengthens hair and restores healthy appearance and texture.”
Be mindful of your products: Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. It is important to protect your hair and scalp from the elements, whether it is UV rays or pollution. “Your hair needs nourishment and care and using sustainably-sourced products are important to protect it from an array of environmental factors. One of my favourite products to protect against free radicals is the SU line by Davines. The SU Milk, specifically, is a leave-on softening milk enriched with UV protective filters that protect cosmetic colour and add hydration during sun exposure.”
Style smarter: To minimize damage from heat styling, "investing in professional tools is your best bet (speak to your stylist for individualized recommendations) – remember ‘you are only as good as the tools you use’. Plus, do not forget to use heat protecting products like the Melu Hair Shield by Davines if using a blow drying and/or heating tools are a part of your daily routine. The shield does just that, working with anti-breakage and elasticizing action, it protects the hair structure from any stresses caused by heat and is great for all hair types.”
