Stop the Madness. Declutter your Makeup Collection
Honestly, is there anything better than taming the chaos of your makeup stash? Didn’t think so—especially after you’ve spent the majority of the past year staring at how messy it is. Channeling Marie Kondo here – but tapping into that joy of tidying up can transform your makeup chaos into perfect order. And yes, that means easily seeing your makeup collection and having access to it. Here are the tips we have been following at home.
Purge Baby Purge: Start by checking the expiry dates. Your stuff won’t work as well and you’re putting yourself at risk for irritation or infection. But in general, according to Healthlineanything that goes near your eyes should be tossed after 3 to 6 months. For your lips after 12 months. Liquid and cream face products (like foundation and blush) will last a year after they’ve been opened, and powder formulas can be stretched to 18 months.
Tip: If it isn’t marked with an expiration date, write down the month/year on a piece of tape and stick it on the product for fast reference later.
Clean everything: Once you have purged, use this time to wipe down and sanitize every surface and clean all of the containers and brushes you use. Makeup is messy! So it doesn’t hurt to give your makeup containers a good wipe down. Two, try once a month, to give your sponges and brushes a clean.
Tip: For your sponges consider using a mason jar with some warm water and dish soap and let them soak. Consider it a washing machine for your sponges!
Get Creative Storage: Make it easy to see your makeup collection. If you can’t see it, odds are you won’t use it. Therefore get creative and invest in stackable drawers, acrylic storage or a makeup case for your collection. Or if you prefer to really get creative – then use mason jars to keep your eyeshadows, glosses or lipsticks organized or a cake stand to display the items you use the most.
Tip: While storing your items, remember to follow the rules below from our friends at Cosmopolitan:
