Accent Wall Ideas for Your Home
You often hear from us about how important it is to incorporate your own personality into your décor and design ideas. One way to do that is to consider a feature wall. It is a great way to add your flair and style into the room. Your home is unique and so are you – so your feature wall should be just as special.
There are many ideas out there- and the Olve Design Studio has broken down what you need to know about adding an accent wall.
First, you need to choose the right wall:
The rule of thumb we like to follow is that you want the accent wall to be the first thing you see when you enter the room. Or be the focal point of the room where you may feature a piece of art i.e., painting, sculpture, or even a wall with a fireplace.
Decide the finish or texture:

Wallpaper
There so many cool patterns to choose from lately (especially since wallpaper has made a huge comeback). We love using darker tones of wallpaper to bring some drama into the room. On the flipside, if you want to make the room brighter and airier but want to add some character – consider choosing line art wallpaper. |
Wood Trim
Incorporating wooden trim has evolved over time. Now you’ll see many modern takes to a feature wall using wood trim in an angular fashion. However, we also love linear wood panels since you can use larger planks to achieve a traditional/modern farmhouse look. Or for a more modern upscale look, you can use thinner wood slats. |
Textured Walls
Textured walls are our favourites approach to an accent wall. We often use paint, roman clay or lime wash. These materials have been around for centuries, but now you can use it with a more modern twist with new colours and finish. Don’t be afraid to use it on an accent wall to create dimension and depth. |
Murals
Murals are also a wonderful way to add your personality in a big way. You can find a lot of mural inspiration online – and they really can add to the ambience and vibe you want to create. We love using landscape as a theme when it comes to murals. Often two tone in colour (simple & subtle), feels like you’re actual in the scene. |
At the OLVE, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you'll like too. We are not affiliated nor do we have an advertising partnerships with the brands we may feature.
